ASSESSMENT
Under the Private Security Act 2001, all individuals wishing to work in the private security industry must hold a recognised qualification before applying for a licence.
Individuals working in the private security industry must undergo a structured training programme, resulting in one of the recognised security qualifications. Applicants who do not hold a qualification endorsed by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) may have their licence application refused.

What you will learn
Private Security Industry
You will learn what security is, what the main aims of security are, the ways in which security can be provided to clients, and the role of the Security Industry Authority (SIA) in promoting the aforementioned.
Legislation
You will learn to differentiate between civil and criminal laws by studying various laws related to security, including the Private Security Industry Act, the Equality Act, and the Human Rights Act.
Arrest Procedures
You will learn to identify offenses for which a security operative may make an arrest, as well as, the limitations of his or her powers. The topic will also cover the procedures to be followed before, during, and after arrest.
Safe Working Practices
You will learn safe working practices stated by the Health and Safety at Work etc, Act, the common risks associated with working in the security industry, as well as, safety signs and signals used by private security operators.
Fire Procedures
You will learn how a fire is started, what the different types of fire are, and how to prevent fire from starting. You will also learn how to use fire safety equipment and how to safely evacuate a premise on fire.
Emergency Procedures
This topic will cover the different types of emergencies, how urgent each of them is, and the actions that need to be taken in the wake of each of them. Moreover, you will learn how to record and report first aid incidents.
Effective Communication
Learn what communication is, what the different types of communication are, what some of the barriers to effective communication are, and how to overcome these barriers enabling you to communicate effectively in a team and at the workplace. You will also learn how to communicate clearly over the telephone and radio using the phonetic alphabet.
Record Keeping
You will learn why it is important to keep accurate records, what information should be included in the records and how to present this information in a court of law.
Terror Threat Awareness
You will learn to identify the different threat levels, the common terror attack methods, and the actions that should be taken in the event of a terror threat. You will also learn how to identify and respond to suspicious items or behaviour.
Keeping Vulnerable People Safe
You will learn how to identify a vulnerable person, understand what factors make a person vulnerable and how to help them when you see any signs of exploitation.
Post-incident Management
You will learn how to improve yourself as a security operator by reflecting on an incident after it has happened and how to report it to authorities so that the industry can collectively improve.
Crimes Relevant to Door Supervision
You will learn the types of common crimes committed against another person or property that a door supervisor is likely to come across. You will also learn to identify offensive weapons.
Effective Search Procedures
In this topic, you will learn about search procedures. You will learn why you should search a person or premises and how to stay within the law while doing so. This topic will enable you to search individuals and properties in a safe manner and to take the necessary actions if there is resistance or a prohibited or restricted item is discovered during the search.
Drug-misuse Legislation, Issues and Procedures
You will learn to recognise the signs of drug abuse or drug dealing and the procedures for dealing with individuals found to be carrying drugs or premises where drugs are found to be stored. You will also learn to dispose of waste materials that are contaminated with drugs.
Preservation of Evidence
You will learn how to look for, collect and preserve evidence found at a crime scene. You will also be taught when you should call the police.
Licensing Law
This topic will cover the laws you need to know in order to successfully carry out the duty of a door supervisor at licenced premises. Some of the topics you will cover include: learning when to refuse entry to or eject a customer, confirming the age of young adults to ensure they are above 18, and recognising conduct that is unlawful under the licencing law, such as gaming and sexual offences.
Queue Management and Venue Capacity
In this topic, you will learn when and how to control queues and disperse crowds while staying within the law the whole time. You will also learn to deal properly with vulnerable people while ejecting them or refusing entry.
Equipment
You will learn to recognise the equipment used for managing venue capacity, as well as, the use of personal protective equipment worn by door supervisors. You will also learn the importance and use of body-worn cameras (BWC) and communication devices.
SIA Door Supervisor Upskilling
Door Supervisors and other security professionals renewing their licence after 1st October 2021 need to take the Upskilling course. That’s because Top-Up Training for an SIA Licence includes new content, based on new skills needed in modern security work. Candidates should be qualified in Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW). However, if you’re yet to complete an EFAW course, you can take it as part of your booked course package.

Your SIA Door Supervisor Licence is valid for 3 years. Once it expires, you can simply take a refresher course and re-apply for it.
I want to work as a Security Guard, but is this course right for me?
You can work as a Security Guard with a Door Supervisor Licence. In fact, the Door Supervisor Licence is one of the most versatile licences in the security industry. It’s important to remember that if you instead take the Security Guard Course, for example, you can’t apply for a Door Supervisor badge.
